Nuclear Analysis of Storage and Transportation Casks
CTR Technical Services, Inc. and NuclearConsultants.com have teamed together to provide quality safety analysis evaluation for a number of storage and transportation casks for spent nuclear fuel.
We have recently provided analysis in containment, shielding, and criticality for the German company, Gesellschaft fur Nuklear-Behalter mbH (GNB), a major cask vendor who have customers in the U.S.A., Korea, Italy, and across Europe.
The CASTOR X/32 storage cask is being licensed to store up to 32 spent nuclear fuel assemblies from the major PWR fuel vendors in the United States. The cask is designed to meet all NRC regulatory requirements with a minimum of weight and cost. After the storage license is obtained, the cask will then be licensed to transport the fuel as well. The transport license will be the first application in the U.S. to use burnup credit in the criticality evaluation, for which our team is responsible.
CASTOR X/32 Storage Cask
We are using state-of-the-art computer codes along with the most recent data evaluations to perform these analyses. We have also implemented unique methods for creating the input decks that minimize errors, automate the input preparation, and ensure consistency in the model. These methods result in accurate, detailed models that can be changed relatively easily when performing perturbation studies or when design changes are necessary.
Nuclear Fuel Storage and Transportation Casks
The CASTOR KN-12 transport cask will be licensed to transport up to 12 spent nuclear fuel assemblies for all PWR fuel types currently being used in Korea. Our team is providing the safety evaluation in the three areas of containment, shielding and criticality for this cask. The cask is well-designed to meet all regulatory requirements at a competitive cost.
The CASTOR X/A17 storage and transport cask will be licensed to store and transport up to 17 spent nuclear fuel assemblies from sites in Italy. The cask is currently undergoing design changes with help from our team.

Incore Monitoring in Korea
CTR Technical Services is providing consulting services for the Korean Electric Power Research Institute in the area of incore monitoring. Research is being conducted to determine the best kind of incore detector to use in advanced PWRs. If incore detectors can be used in place of excore detectors for reactor protection, then the reactors can be operated more economically while preserving the same margin of safety. The detector materials being evaluated are rhodium, hafnium, and platinum with consideration also to a combination of different detector types.
Rombough Runs 50 Miler in Iowa
Charles Rombough, President of CTR Technical Services, ran the Fairfield Trail 50 in Fairfield, Iowa on August 27. The course was all on forest trails. Although relatively flat by Colorado standards, the trails included some steep hills. Rombough was fourth overall in a time of 9:53:02 out of 14 starters. This result allowed Rombough to qualify for the Western States 100 miler in California next summer.

Determination
Determination is what keeps us hammering away. Determined people possess the stamina and courage to pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule, or unfavorable circumstances. In fact, discouragement usually spurs us on to greater things.

Who We Are
CTR Technical Services was incorporated on May 15, 1987 to provide software and analysis services for the nuclear industry. Since then, we have done work for 26 international organizations in the fields of reactor physics calculations and measurements, reactor core monitoring, shielding evaluations, criticality analysis, and custom software applications.
